Want to Write a Novel?

The Story Idea

FictionCraft is my monthly column of articles about writing the novel and getting it published. The content is based on my years of experience as an author (as Patricia Ryan, P.B. Ryan, and Louisa Burton), writing teacher (for the literary center Writers & Books), and publishing professional (I handled the marketing for a division of a large publishing company when I lived in New York City). When I was first getting serious about becoming a professional novelist, and finding most writing workshops uninformative, I longed to be taught the fundamentals by a professional. FictionCraft is my attempt to do just that for aspiring novelists looking for solid information that can help them both artistically and practically. This column also appears on the Erotica Readers and Writers website, which I encourage you to check out if you're interested in writing erotic fiction. The articles, however, apply to all types of novels--literary, mainstream, and the various genres.
